You guys…
I’ve been reviewing a lot of books here over the last 6 months or so, and you’ve all come to know me as someone who likes creepy stuff. Because of this, I fear that you may think I am “reading too many of those spooky books” or I have let myself get taken away with my imagination. But I sh*t you not, I think my house is haunted.
So, today I’m going to not review a book, but instead review the experience I’ve had so far in my house. I am prompted to write this today because yet again, I’ve had another weird thing happen to me this morning.
But for ease of understanding, I’ll start at the beginning.
The House
I bought my house years ago after moving from apartment to apartment, which was becoming exceedingly difficult to afford because I had a very large (and amazing) dog. The only options I had were cramped studio spaces that charged far too much, and were of course run by slumlords.
My grandma passed away and left me a little bit of money, which I used for a down payment on a house. Otherwise, truthfully, I would’ve never been able to afford my own house. Needless to say, it wasn’t very expensive and it’s in an area that isn’t the greatest, but I fell in love with the space for the price and signed immediately.
The house is roughly 152 years old. My parent’s were not impressed with this because they felt like an old house would have too many problems, but in my mind it had character. It had withstood 152 years of weather, chaos, and still stood strong. I admired the age of the house, as well as the charm it has, and let’s be honest… I wasn’t going to be able to afford anything sparkling and new.
Grandma?
Nothing happened right away. The first night I slept in the living room, because I was afraid to be in a big space with just my dogs. Eventually, I did sleep in my new bed and the house started to feel like my own.
Within a couple weeks I started feeling something a little weird. While unpacking boxes, a record started playing from my dining room. One of my grandma’s old records. It was strange, but I sort of thought maybe it was a sign from her.
That night I woke up with the feeling something was watching me. I just woke right up. (This becomes a common theme.) Scanning the room, I saw what looked like a very tall black figure in the corner of my bedroom. Thinking it was just the dark playing tricks on me, I sat up and rubbed my eyes, but the figure was still there. Scrambling for the remote, I turned the TV on to get some light in the room, and I watched the figure kneel down and seemingly disappear. I told my parents about it the next day, and they thought, like the record, maybe it was my grandma… But I was thinking, would she really act that creepy?
Unleashing A Nickname
I used to paint a lot of serial killer portraits when I first bought my house. There was a website that sold my designs, as well as many others, on t-shirts and pillows. (Yeah, I know it’s weird. There’s a market for everything.) So I started painting my first portrait inside the new house. I was oddly inspired and motivated, which is sort of unlike me, and I finished my best portrait to date, Jim Jones, in under 4 hours! Again, this was very unusual, as I usually painted a portrait for days.
Feeling rather proud and accomplished, I grabbed a load of laundry and begin waking down my basement steps. Halfway down, I heard this extremely strange sound from behind me that I can only compare to a growl. I turned quickly, too quickly, and I lost my footing. I fell down the steps and my ankle smacked off of something hard. A spray of blood coated the basement wall, and I dropped all of my laundry. Scared by the sound, I left the laundry where it fell and ran back up the steps.
This has prompted my friends to joke that the ghost is Jim Jones… It isn’t, but that’s what the girls have started to call it. J.J. for short.
The Strangest Wave
Since then, it feels like the activity comes in waves. There will be months where nothing unusual happens, and then there will be a 1-2 week period where things start small, and eventually grow to a much larger scale. When it feels like it is at its worst, suddenly it all stops. Things go quiet for a while, and I’m just on pins and needles waiting for the next time it comes around.
To me, this was the most compelling “wave.”
I was sleeping by myself one night before my partner moved in. Again, much like the shadow experience, I opened my eyes from a dead sleep with a strange feeling like someone was there. Without moving, I noticed the door to the side room was open directly in front of me. If you know me, you know I cannot sleep with any doors open inside my bedroom.
Before I could fully comprehend the door being open, I felt what I can only describe as a person’s finger beginning to poke my right cheek. I literally felt it progressively and slowly digging deeper into my face, before I sat up, rubbed my cheek, and turned all the lights on. It was such a disgusting and weird sensation, and I could still feel it there for what felt like hours. I stayed up that night and watched TV.
I didn’t tell anyone about this incident because it just seemed too weird. A few nights later, my partner stayed over. With the same weird feeling, I opened my eyes in the middle of the night to find my partner standing over me, holding his finger out. I asked him, “what the hell are you doing?,” and he slowly started poking my cheek in the exact same spot. I slapped his hand away and started shaking him to wake him up. Groggy, with no words, he just went back to his side of the bed and went to sleep. He has little to no memory of this, but it was too exact to be a coincidence. Another sleepless night.
The next night I was alone again. At some odd hour, my dogs woke me up barking like crazy. This is not normal. I heard something crash in my dining room and immediately became alarmed that someone was inside of my house. (I had a partial break in only a few months earlier, so I was very scared.) I have a security system now, and I wondered why it wasn’t set off. I punched 911 into my phone, but hesitated to hit dial. I left it that way in my hand, and slowly walked to my bedroom door. My big dog stayed next to me, whereas my small one ran and hid.
I could hear things moving downstairs and my mouth went dry. I could literally feel my heart beating in my throat and my head. I grabbed a weapon, and slowly crept down the steps, my dog only taking each step down as I did. This descent felt like it went on for hours, as I continued to hear things moving around the dining room. My light switch isn’t at the bottom of my steps, but instead across the room, so when I got to the bottom of the steps I tried to let my eyes adjust before sprinting to the switch. I could see 2 lamps knocked over and my dining room table and chairs were moved across the room. I ran for the light switch and everything stopped. It was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. I slowly turned on all of my lights downstairs. No one was inside my house.
Things went quiet again for a while.
I had probably 2 or 3 months of normal. The next big thing to happen, was I woke up to the sound of breaking glass inside of my bedroom. I sat up, thinking of what could’ve just shattered? I stayed still for minutes just listening. When I turned my lights on, the frame on the wall directly across from me had shattered into thousands of pieces all over my floor.
Last month, I was attempting to do laundry in the basement again, when the door slammed behind me. I was trapped. The door was pinned by something. I ended up having to partially break my basement door and squeeze out, which really hurt to be honest.
Two nights ago I woke up to loud footsteps inside my bedroom. When I walked towards the corner where I originally saw the shadow, the footsteps stopped. Not thinking much, I got back into bed and tried to clear my thoughts, when a tapping started on my window. I don’t have trees outside or anything that would create that sound, which I had never heard before. I sat there and listened to the random tapping, until I decided to turn on the TV and drown out the sound.
This morning I was walking from my dining room into my kitchen when something loud happened upstairs, and a gust of wind blew through the dining room so fiercely that all of my curtains were dancing around from the force.
This has prompted me to share, as I never fully know what to expect from this house.
I wanted to open a conversation about hauntings and experiences like this.
Do you think my house is haunted, or do you think I’ve completely lost my mind?
Do you believe in ghosts?
Have you ever had anything supernatural happen to you?
I really want to hear from you!

I believe in a supreme being and an afterlife. I also believe people who cared about me and passed will keep an eye on me. Finally, I believe my dogs who passed will reunite with me in the afterlife, and they alone are a force to contend with.
I don’t feel threatened because, well, the worst thing they could do would be to kill me, and then they’d have to face me there; and they know it wouldn’t be pleasant. LOL Besides, I have too many beings on the other side who loved me and would stick up for me. It would be a heck of a rumble, as we used to say in the Brooklyn of my youth.
That said, it does sound like your house is haunted. No big deal. Just don’t be scared.
First, I recommend a real dream catcher, not one of those touristy things, to eliminate the possibility of bad vibes in the air. Go to a medicine man or woman and get them to make one for you. It won’t be cheap if they agree.
Second, next time it happens, yell out “I’m gonna get you mofo,” and rush them. Make sure, though, to make it real for them if you find someone from this side. A good baseball bat will do. And, oh yeah, call the cops.
Good luck!

Hahaha! I agree with you that there’s gotta be something beyond this life, just based on living in this house! I like to think our loved ones who’ve passed are looking over us! Maybe that’s why I have some downtime of peace and quiet in this house every now and then!
Great recommendation on the dream catcher. I’ll look into someone who can make one for me! May not be cheap but if it’ll help, I’m all for it!
I sage the house sometimes and it also seems to work a bit, but again… just short periods of time.
I’ll do my best not to be scared. Since my boyfriend moved in I feel less afraid, not to mention less crazy. Haha!

Okay, I’m not going to lie, serial killer paintings sound pretty bad ass. I love old houses, I’m with you, I think they have a ton of character.
I’ve experienced some weird things in my life but in our current house, we frequently hear someone walking around upstairs when there is no one up there. :3

Hahaha thanks for not finding me weird on the serial killer portrait front. I just finished a Richard Ramirez! Haha. 😄
Footsteps can be SO unsettling because the scariest possibility is a PERSON is up there!!! 😱😱😱 Maybe it’s an old soul just checking in on ya. 🖤 Hopefully. Haha!

One of the original owners died in the house I believe and there were only the couple before us that ever owned the house. So I’m assuming he’s waiting for us to throw another party as they were apparently childless partyaholics. 😛

Oh man, they’re a partier! Hahaha that’s so funny! Well, hopefully as long as you don’t cut loose too often they’ll leave you alone!

I’m not sure I believe in ghosts though I do believe in a spiritual realm. And I can’t decide if a ghost or a real live intruder would be the more terrifying answer to your experiences! I love old houses and have sometimes wished we lived in one but perhaps I should be glad since our 1980s built house is far less likely to be haunted!
